One of the most neglected risk factors for atopic dermatitis is the use of common foaming agents known as sulphates, specifically Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulphate (SLES).
Found in almost all standard soaps and shampoos, these detergents can destroy an already damaged skin barrier. Dr. Konrad recommends switching to sulphate-free antiseptic syndettes (synthetic detergents). These specialized cleansers reduce the colonies of pathogens (like Staphylococcus aureus) on the skin without stripping away essential lipids.

Long, hot baths are a common trigger for flare-ups. To keep atopic skin hydrated:
• Temperature: Use only lukewarm water.

• Drying: Avoid rubbing the skin with a towel, which creates microscopic tears (ragads). Instead, gently pat the skin dry.
Because atopic skin loses water rapidly, the “golden window” for moisturizing is right after washing. Applying Barrier-Supporting Oils or creams while the skin is still slightly damp helps lock in moisture. Dr. Konrád suggests choosing emulsifier-free oils (such as almond, coconut, or babassu oil) to supplement the missing linoleic acid in the epidermis.
